WELCOME TO GHUNSA SCHOOL
NEPAL
ABOUT OUR SCHOOL
Established in 1965, Ghunsa school lies at an an altitude of 3400m in the remote village of Ghunsa in the far east of Nepal. Ghunsa is the highest village in the valley leading to Kanchenjunga, the third highest mountain in the world at 8,586m.
Our school is the only school in the valley, catering for children age 4 to 14 years old. As some children come from families living several days walk away from Ghunsa we have hostel facilities for 36 students. We have a staff of 8 wonderful teachers and an ambitious new school administration board.

NEWS
In June we celebrated World Environment Day - a cause close to our hearts in the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area!

SUPPORT US !
In 2015 the school saw great improvements in hostel facilities and classroom infrastructure with the support of the Himalayan Development Foundation Australia. However many of these facilities are in need of urgent renovation to create an inviting learning environment for the children. The new school management committee is striving to provide quality education to children who are less fortunate than in most developed countries, but we know we can’t do everything on our own and need your support too!
Your support will help us:
-
Renovate school infrastructure and improve hostel facilities
-
Provide warm school uniform for the children
-
Plan a healthy organic meals for the children
-
Set up a library
-
Recruit a cultural teacher to promote and preserve sherpa culture
-
Add professional learning materials
-
Introduce an incentive plan to motivate school teachers as well as students
-
Send school teachers on training courses
-
Organize social tours for the children
-
Buy sports materials
-
Encourage volunteers
-
Wi-Fi facilities to support online learning and teaching
Help us to help our children in this remote location secure better a future for a better tomorrow!

CULTURAL EXCHANGE AND VOLUNTEERING
Our village is a traditional Nepali Sherpa village in the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area of the high Himalaya, close to the border with Tibet and India, retaining many of the Buddhist and Tibetan ways of life. The conservation area is managed by the local community and has protected forests and wildlife including snow leopard, red panda and blue sheep. Ghunsa is home of the Tashi Choeling Gompa, one of the most important gompas in Eastern Nepal. The village is about 3 days walk from Taplejung, which is a larger town with shops, and restaurants and a small airport and connected by road to the tea plantations of Illam and the airport of Bhadrapur with connecting flights to Kathmandu.
During your time here you will be warmly welcomed into our community, stay with a local family and get a strong sense of Nepali village life. Our school relies on local volunteers from our community as well as those from further afield. Outside school life there are many activities you can engage in including hiking in our beautiful conservation area, taking tea with the locals and learning about our history, crafts, cuisine and cultural traditions. The surrounding mountains and the tranquility of our village create a perfect setting for yoga and meditation. If you like, we can also give you some Nepali lessons!
